Where I’m From

I am from sand and mud in the heavy rain
I am from trees growing effortlessly
I am from veld fan, the source of vegetation
I am from Ramadan while fasting until sunset where a special gathering takes place
I am from Rwan and Rudy and Homey
I am from “wake up and fix your bed” and “Clean your wishes after you eat”
From dressing modestly not looking down at your phone when roaming the streets
I am from Islam and greeting others with a smile on my face
I am from Sudan and falafel and fava beans with rice
I am from my dad coming to America and changing his life for our sake
From his first bike crash on the Brooklyn bridge
I am from roller skating with my family in Ohio and falling over and over again as my siblings laugh at me
